HOW TO PICK A BACKSPLASH FOR YOUR KITCHEN

Deborah Nelson October 16, 2015

I've been thinking a lot about backsplashes these days because I need to choose one for my own kitchen, which you can see above. Typically my rule of thumb is to go with a fairly simple and quiet backsplash, but of course it completely depends ...

BEFORE & AFTER: DOUBLE DOORS

Deborah Nelson October 12, 2015

When I purchased my old house, I wanted to add ‘new’ doors at the back of the house from the kitchen. I thought this would add charm to the space and I liked the idea of outdoor access here for carrying in groceries and things ...

TAKE ADVANTAGE OF ORIGINAL FEATURES

Deborah Nelson October 10, 2015

When I bought 'The Woodbox', one of the many features I loved about the house was that it had so much original character and charm intact. The original house was built in 1844, and there have been various additions on the house since then.  Regardless, ...

ASK DEB NELSON: WHAT DO I PUT ON MY COFFEE TABLE?

One thing I love experimenting with is a coffee table display. Like mantels and bookcases, your coffee table can have an attractive, stylish display of items. I tend to change my around a lot – but typically always have a plant or flowers (especially in the summer depending on what I pick from the garden) and a stack of books. Other items that can work are candles, a tray is always nice to help 'ground' the items and other small decorative objects. Strangely I often seem to have one natural item – a large rock, drift wood, sea shell, a pinecone or antlers. It's a place you can easily try a number of items until you find the look you like.  Here are a few of mine over the years.

Deborah Nelson October 8, 2015

One thing I love about decorating is adding lots of unique, antique accessories. I have many interesting old things around my house! I rotate things around from tables, shelves and mantels. People are always interested in the story...where the items came from and how old ...

I used a variety of antiques in this guest room - the bed, chair, blanket and artwork were all items I've collected over time. I love how they add so much character to a room, the antique charcoal sketch above the bed is dated from the 1800’s
